NYC Sewer Community Allegedly Forced out by 'Jewish Element'
New York City sits on one of the largest buried worlds in America. Official figures put the sewer network at roughly 7,400 to 7,500 miles of pipe — long enough, if you unspooled it, to run from the Atlantic to the Pacific and back. Combined sewers in the older boroughs carry stormwater and waste in the same brick and concrete arteries. Some of those mains are six feet across. A man can walk upright in them. Most New Yorkers never think about that.
When I was approached by Jacob Engels of Command Station Consulting he said he was representing a client who had been living in the New York sewer system and was now above ground. The client’s group, Engels has publicly called “The Three Sewer People of New York City,” issued a statement after viral footage showed figures in waders and headlamps climbing out of manholes in Brooklyn, Queens, and Midtown.
Their message was simple: they are a nocturnal community. They mean no harm. They want to be left alone. And they say they were forced out of the tunnels they used by another group — a Jewish community that also operates in the same underground network.
That last part is why this is not just another “mole people” clip for the algorithm.
What the city has already admitted:
Starting in May 2026, security cameras and bystanders captured groups prying open maintenance covers at night, disappearing into the system, and coming back out hours later. Gravesend. Williamsburg. Astoria. Then Midtown, across from Penn Station. Then near Park Avenue during UN week. Some wore chest waders and lamps. Some changed clothes on the sidewalk and drove off.The NYPD and DEP line has been consistent: illegal, dangerous, no public threat identified. Detectives have floated treasure hunting — jewelry, coins, scrap washed into the drains. Two men were later charged with trespassing after one of the later sightings and told investigators they were looking for valuables. archyde.com
That explanation covers some of the videos. It does not cover a community that hired a publicist.
Anyone who has read Jennifer Toth’s The Mole People or followed urban explorers like Steve Duncan already knows the tunnels under New York are not empty mythology. Freedom Tunnel. Abandoned stations. Old waterways bricked over and turned into sewers. People have slept, cooked, and wired electricity down there for decades. What is new is a group speaking through a representative and saying they were displaced, not discovered.
The claim: forced out
According to Engels and the statement he's circulating, his clients are not tourists with shovels. They are residents of a nocturnal community that used a section of the sewer system as home. They say another organized group — described in their public language as a Jewish community using the same underground space — came into conflict with them and pushed them out.
I am not going to pretend I have walked those miles of pipe. I have not. What I can say is this: if you have 7,500 miles of dark, mostly unmonitored infrastructure under the densest city in the country, the idea that more than one group would find a use for it is not a stretch. Churches, synagogues, and storefront ministries already occupy odd spaces above ground in New York. Extending that into service tunnels and old mains is the kind of thing that sounds insane until you remember the 2024 Chabad tunnel episode in Crown Heights, when students were found to have dug unauthorized passages connecting buildings around 770 Eastern Parkway. newsweek
Different story. Same city. Same lesson: the map of New York that the public sees is not the only map.
Strange happenings
The part Engels brought to me that does not fit the “guys looking for gold” press release is what the sewer community says they witnessed before they left.
They describe activity in the tunnels that does not look like scavenging or exploration. Movement that does not match DEP crews. Patterns that do not match the treasure-hunter narrative the city prefers. I am not going to invent details they have not put on the record. If they are willing to sit for a longer account — locations, dates, what “strange” actually looked like in a six-foot brick main at 3 a.m. — that belongs in a follow-up, not in speculation.
What I will say is the obvious: people who have lived down there for any length of time see the system differently than a detective who dropped in after a 911 call. They know which laterals flood, which chambers stay dry, which covers are watched, which stretches go quiet after the last train. If they say something shifted in those corridors, that is at least a lead.
Why the official story is incomplete
New York has every incentive to keep this small. Trespassing. Scavengers. Migrants. Influencers. Close the file. The alternative is admitting that a city of eight million has a second city under it that it does not control, and that factions down there can force each other into the street.
Engels is a political operative, not a sewer rat. That cuts both ways. He knows how to get a statement in front of the Post, Daily News, and Newsmax. He also has a client who, if the claim is real, had a reason to come up for air and talk. The fact that he brought that client to independent outlets instead of only the tabloids is why I took the meeting.
What comes next
The sewer people asked the public to leave them alone. That request is already broken. The videos are out. The manholes are watched. If a religious group is using the same network, someone in city government or in that community already knows more than they have said.
The Veil Report will keep the door open. If Engels’ clients want to describe, on the record, what they saw in those tunnels — not slogans, specifics — we will run it. Until then, the story is this:New York’s underground is not empty.
